The multi-colored Church of the Resurrection, also known as the Church on the Spilled Blood, stands on the Griboedov Canal and is easily seen from the Nevsky Prospect. The church was built by the Tsar Alexander the Third on the spot where members of the "People's Will" group assassinated his father Alexander the Second on March 1st 1881.
The church was built to the design of Alfred Parland in 1883-1907. The decoration both externally and internally, consists predominantly of mosaics with a total area 75,000sq.ft. |
